San Antonio FC earned a 1-1 draw against Sacramento Republic FC at Bonney Field on Saturday. A first half goal by forward Cesar Elizondo and a late penalty by the hosts left the score level between the two clubs.
SAFC forward Cesar Elizondo opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Sacramento Republic goalkeeper Evan Newton saved a long-range shot by Sebastien Thuriere but was unable to hold on to the ball, which Elizondo found for a tap-in to earn the lead.
The goal was Elizondo’s first for the club in his fourth appearance for the silver and black. The Costa Rican signed with SAFC on July 11 after spending time with Perez Zeledon last season in Costa Rica’s first division.
The hosts found the equalizer in the fourth minute of stoppage time after Octavio Guzman beat SAFC goalkeeper Josh Ford from the spot to level the score 1-1.
Ford came up big for his team after recording six saves throughout the match, tying his personal best for the third time this season. The captain returned to the starting lineup after serving a three-match ban for his involvement in an altercation against OKC Energy FC on July 9.
Eight minutes of stoppage were added to the match after an injury delay involving SAFC defender Milton Palacios. Palacios was transported to UC Davis Medical Center for further evaluation.
San Antonio FC will return to action on August 13 as they travel to face Arizona United SC. The club will look to earn three points on the road in their first of two consecutive encounters against the club.
