Season one in the San Antonio FC era came and went in the blink of an eye. We’re fast approaching the club’s one-year anniversary, and are closing in on some important landmark dates since Spurs Sports & Entertainment established a soccer franchise in the Alamo City. As we near the end of an eventful 2016, let’s revisit a key date in SAFC history.
This Thursday will mark the one-year anniversary since SS&E ventured into the soccer world. The City of San Antonio and Bexar County purchased Toyota Field from Gordon Hartman on Dec. 22, 2015, while SS&E agreed to a 20-year lease to run all operations within the venue as they began their pursuit to bring Major League Soccer to San Antonio.
Soon after, Toyota Field became the official home of USL San Antonio, which was eventually branded as San Antonio FC. The aforementioned lease of Toyota Field also gave SS&E the responsibility of operating STAR Soccer Complex, which is the host venue for events such as youth and adult recreational leagues, youth club matches, and is also home to the San Antonio FC Pro Academy.
Toyota Field has undergone several renovations since it became the home of San Antonio FC. The 8,500 seat soccer-specific stadium is among the best facilities in the USL, and continues to evolve along with STAR with the aim to form one of the best environments in American soccer.
