San Antonio FC (12-12-7) fell 0-2 to Saint Louis FC (13-8-10) at Toyota Stadium on Saturday night in the club’s final away match of the regular season and last of a three-game road trip.
“Tonight was a tough result, it was a very tight game,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “What we need to do now is control the business that we can control, and our focus needs to go straight to next week’s game. We have to make sure we pick up points as we strive to make the playoffs.”
The first half of the match ended scoreless despite several chances for both clubs. Saint Louis then opened the scoring late in the second half after midfielder Lewis Hilton placed a shot in the top corner past SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone for the 1-0 lead.
The hosts added a second in stoppage time after forward Albert Dikua found himself in on an open goal following a breakaway and converted to make it 0-2. SAFC was unable to find the back of the net despite recording seven shots, five on target, and 50.9 percent possession throughout the match.
SAFC defender Moises Hernandez was shown a red card in the 87th minute of the match. The Dallas native joined SAFC on loan from FC Dallas (MLS) in September. Hernandez recorded three clearances, one interception and one possession gained on the night.
San Antonio FC will now return home for its final three matches of the 2018 USL regular season. The Alamo City club will host Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Sept. 29, Las Vegas Lights FC on Oct. 6, and will conclude the season against Rio Grande Valley FC on Oct. 13 at Toyota Field.
