San Antonio FC (3-5-3) tied Tulsa Roughnecks FC (4-3-4) 1-1 at Toyota Field on Saturday night, extending the team’s unbeaten run at Toyota Field to six consecutive matches in all competitions.
“We were searching for three points tonight and you saw our players trying to get those points on the back of three matches in eight days,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “For us, we created as many opportunities in the attack as we have all year, but we didn’t execute. The bottom line is everyone in that locker room wants more, but the players’ effort and determination were there for everyone to see. Now the bottom line is we have to convert our chances into goals to put us in positions to win the game.”
SAFC opened the scoring just five minutes into the match when midfielder Jack Barmby found Ever Guzman on the right flank with a long ball, which the forward pushed into the box on a one-touch to find midfielder Brian Gomez inside the box. The Argentinian buried it past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead to score his third goal of the season, while the assist marked Guzman’s first of the campaign.
The Roughnecks then equalized in the 16th minute after midfielder Rodrigo Da Costa dinked a free kick off the post, which bounced into the back of goalkeeper Matthew Cardone and into the net to level the score at 1-1.
SAFC created nine chances on the night, while the team outshot Tulsa 15-8. On the defensive end, the Alamo City club combined for 14 tackles, 18 clearances, and eight interceptions, all the while recording 57% of possession.
San Antonio native Jose Gallegos made his USL Championship debut on the night after substituting into the match in the 90th minute. The 17-year-old has featured in two matches for his hometown club after making his professional debut in the team’s 2-0 win over Laredo Heat in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday.
SAFC will return to USL Championship action on Saturday, May 25 as the team travels to face RGV FC in the first South Texas Derby of the 2019 season.
