SAN ANTONIO – USL San Antonio has made its first player signing in franchise history, bringing dynamic midfielder Carlos Alvarez to the club for the upcoming 2016 USL season, subject to final league and federation approval. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Alvarez, the second overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, comes to San Antonio from the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. In 22 appearances on loan to the Charlotte Independence (USL) last season, Alvarez scored two goals and notched four assists in 1315 total minutes.
“Carlos is a player I’ve admired and respected for a long time,” said Powell. “He is a creative attacking player that’s looking for a good run of games, and we envision him being a big part of our roster this season.”
The 25-year-old was originally drafted by Chivas USA (MLS) in 2013 and made 40 appearances for the club from 2013-14, scoring two goals. In July of 2014, Alvarez was traded to the Rapids and subsequently made 11 appearances for the senior side between the 2014-15 seasons. The California native played his college soccer at the University of Connecticut.
“I want to give thanks to the USL San Antonio franchise and Coach Powell for being interested in me and for giving me the opportunity to keep doing what I love to do – playing futbol,” said Alvarez. “I’m happy to join this new family and I can promise that I will do my best every day when I step on the field and will always play my heart out.”
In December, SS&E announced that it reached an agreement with Bexar County and the City of San Antonio to operate a USL soccer franchise at Toyota Field starting in 2016. USL San Antonio will debut in front of their home supporters at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 9 against Sporting Kansas City affiliate, Swope Park Rangers.
