Canadian youth international comes to San Antonio from Toronto FC
SAN ANTONIO (Mar. 5, 2024) – San Antonio FC has acquired forward Hugo Mbongue on loan from Toronto FC, pending league, federation and international approval. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We extend our sincere appreciation to Toronto FC for their assistance in facilitating the loan, allowing us to welcome Hugo to our team,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “Hugo’s arrival brings immense potential and a hunger for success at the striker position.”
The Toronto native began his career in his hometown, signing with Toronto FC II in USL League One after being brought up in the club’s academy program. Over the course of two seasons, Mbongue bagged 4 goals and 6 assists in 1,336 minutes. In 2022, he signed a Homegrown Player contract with Toronto and made his first team debut in October. Since then, the 19-year-old has seen action in 14 matches with the MLS team, while also spending time in MLS Next Pro with the reserve team.
Mbongue has appeared for the Canadian National Team at the U15 and U20 levels. He scored a hat trick in his international debut at the U15 Concacaf Championship.
San Antonio FC will open the 2024 USL Championship regular season against Loudoun United FC on Saturday, March 9 at Toyota Field. Tickets for the match are available online at SanAntonioFC.com. The 2024 season is presented by Toyota.
