These words from new San Antonio FC defender Kai Greene sum up his first impressions of the club and the roster well, as the team continues training camp. Greene signed for the club in December after spending the previous three seasons with San Antonio’s rivals RGV FC. The Seton Hall graduate enjoyed his time in the Valley with the Toros but is also very excited about the next stop in his career with SAFC.
“I had my time with RGV,” said Greene. “I enjoyed my time there, but now I flip the page and I’m on to the next chapter of my life in San Antonio. I love the city so far and I love the team, so I am happy to be here.”
With training camp now a few days in, Greene likes the way the squad is already shaping up. He is one of 12 new faces on the roster, with MLS and USL veterans along with internationals and recent college graduates helping shape up the San Antonio roster. Greene knows how important these first couple of weeks can be when building a team – or a family as he likes to call it.
“These first few days, everybody is just getting the rust out of their system,” he said. “Everyone is gelling, and the environment is great so far. After practice we are shaking hands even though are competitive on the field and are demanding a lot from each other. But off the field we are back as a family.”
Along with the first impressions teammates are making within the camp, Greene is taking notice of the wealth of talent at San Antonio’s disposal for the upcoming season. The current roster includes players who have been named in teams of the season, players with a wealth of championship game experience and veterans of first divisions all over the world. Greene – who has established himself as good defender over the USL Championship the last three seasons – is more than excited about the prospect of teaming up with these new teammates for the 2019 campaign.
“I love the team, and I am very enthusiastic of what we have to offer this season,” said Greene. “We look scary. You look at the roster and the names we have and then you see it take shape on the pitch. I’m really excited and happy to be here.”
Greene acknowledges that some fans love you and some fans hate you. It comes with the territory of being a professional player. However, he is looking forward to lining up at Toyota Field with the home colors on for the first time this year. He has played multiple matches at the SAFC home stadium as a member of RGV FC, and he looks forward to the home fans having his back on the pitch rather than the boos he and other members of the Toros occasionally received.
For him, March 9 can’t come soon enough. As the team progresses through training camp, Greene will continue to have one eye on the start of the regular season.
“That should be interesting,” he said regarding the new support. “I had a good relationship with [RGV FC] so how the fans feel is up to them this season. That’s what you signed up for. I’m excited to get going.”
