This Saturday, San Antonio FC will host Liga MX side Santos Laguna at Toyota Field. The match marks the club’s first international friendly in franchise history, and the first to be broadcast live through the San Antonio FC Facebook page.
The match will take place amid the Silver and Black’s great run so far in the 2017 USL season, where it currently ranks second after losing just one match halfway through the season.
Santos Laguna will visit the Alamo City club as part of their preseason tour through the United States, where they have played against fellow top-tier Mexican sides Chivas de Guadalajara, Club America, earning a 5-0 win and a 3-2 loss.
Meanwhile, San Antonio FC will take a break from their USL campaign, where they currently have a 10-1-5 record 16 matches into the season. SAFC recorded a 1-1 draw in their most recent league match against Sacramento Republic FC, and has not played a match at home since June 17, when they posted a 3-1 win over Tulsa Roughnecks FC thanks to a brace from Kris Tyrpak and a goal from Devin Vega.
The match will mark the second friendly match to take place at Toyota Field this week after Liga MX teams Chivas de Guadalajara and Club Atlas faced off in an intense edition of the Clasico Tapatio. Last year, Toyota Field was also host to an exhibition match between Cruz Azul and Club Atlas.
Since its opening in 2013, Toyota Field has been the host of 11 international friendly matches, seven of which have featured club teams from Mexico, two from Costa Rica, as well as the Mexico U-21 and Costa Rica U-23 squads. The last time that a Liga MX club faced a San Antonio club was in 2014 when CF Monterrey and the now-defunct San Antonio Scorpions played to a 1-1 draw.
SAFC will aim to record their first victory against an international opponent in front of its local fans as it prepares to return to USL play next weekend to face OKC Energy FC prior to taking on first-place Real Monarchs SLC the following week.
