San Antonio FC today announced that forward Shawn Chin will return to the club for the 2017 USL season, pending league and federation approval. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
After joining the club prior to the start of the 2016 season, Chin appeared in 17 USL matches, starting nine and totaling 821 minutes played, scoring three goals and recording an assist. The Miami native suffered what appeared to be a season-ending leg injury in the June 15 Open Cup matchup against the Houston Dynamo, however Chin made a surprising comeback and played in the final six matches of the USL season.
Chin also appeared in two Open Cup matches, starting one and totaling 70 minutes played as the club advanced to the fourth round of the tournament.
“We are really excited to have Shawn Chin back,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Unfortunately, last year he suffered a bad injury, but his hunger and desire to get back in a timely fashion shows his determination to play for the club. He had meaningful minutes for us last season, scoring several goals and he is a player who can be very versatile for us. We are excited to have him back for 2017.”
Chin joined San Antonio from the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (NASL) where he spent the previous two seasons. The Miami native scored three goals and collected eight assists in 53 total appearances with the club between 2014 and 2015. Chin was an integral part of the 2014 Strikers roster that made their way to the NASL Championship game at Toyota Field, leading the team in assists during the campaign.
Prior to his time in Fort Lauderdale, Chin played for the now-defunct VSI Tampa Bay, as well as Minnesota United and FC Edmonton of the NASL. Chin made two appearances for the United States U-20 national team in 2008, and played college soccer at both Boston College and the University of South Florida.
“I am so excited to return to such a great organization in San Antonio FC,” said Chin. “I am looking forward to getting back to the city and helping the team reach our goals this season in front of the amazing fans.”
With the return of Chin, the current San Antonio roster stands at 20 as the club prepares to begin training camp in February.
San Antonio FC is currently prepping for its second season in the USL, which is scheduled to kick off on March 26 at RGV FC before the club returns to Toyota Field for its home opener on April 1 vs. LA Galaxy II at 7:30 p.m. Fans interested in season tickets can contact the SAFC sales office at 210-444-5MLS or visit www.sanantoniofc.com.
