A Part of the City
SAFC Midfielder Rafa Castillo Feels at Home in San Antonio
San Antonio FC recently announced that midfielder Rafa Castillo will return to the club for the 2017 season. The Colombian native has become an icon for San Antonio soccer, and has grown to be a fan favorite in his two years of representing the Alamo City on the pitch. One of Castillo’s many important qualities as a player is his leadership on the field, a trait that he acquired over the course of a long professional journey that started in Pereira, Colombia when he was just 17 years old.
But after representing the crests of more than ten clubs throughout his career, Castillo finally feels like he found a true home in San Antonio FC.
“I’ve never thought about leaving San Antonio,” Castillo said. “I’ve never thought about another team, different colors, or a different stadium. I feel completely comfortable, like I’m part of San Antonio. I feel like I belong in this city, in this organization, and in this team.”
Castillo impressed in his first campaign with the club, appearing in 28 of the 30 matches in the season, leading the team in goals with five (tied with forward Franck Tayou), and ranking third on the squad with two assists. Despite those accomplishments, however, Castillo’s mentality is that there is always room to grow and improve in soccer, and that’s exactly what he intends to do.
“Thinking about everything I accomplished last season means that next season I have to do it again or improve,” Castillo said. “I can’t be below the expectations that have generated for Rafael Castillo. In regards to goals, I would’ve liked to score more, but I did what I could in the position that I played. If I couldn’t be involved in all the matches last season, then I have to earn my place in every single match this season and continue to give 110 percent and be ambitious.”
Although it’s common for soccer players to begin their athletic decline once they’re out of their twenties, Castillo has proven that he is still able to compete at a high level at 36 years old. The center midfielder ranked third on the squad in minutes played last season and showed no signs of struggling physically, a trait that he attributes to his mental approach towards the game.
“I think my mentality helps me stay well physically,” Castillo said. “God gives me all the strength and energy to feel full, but if you’re mentally strong, and you know that you can always give more, then you transmit that physically.”
Castillo is no stranger to playing for big clubs. While playing in Colombia, he wore the shirt of both Atletico Nacional and Millonarios, two soccer giants whose rivalry is dubbed the “Superclasico,” the equivalent of Chivas and Club America in Mexico, or Real Madrid and Barcelona in Spain. In Egypt, he won a championship with Al Ahly, a historical colossus of the game in the Egyptian Premier League. Experiences like those set him apart from other players, making his approach to the game mature and level-headed. Like a true pro, in his mind there are always new goals to reach, which he uses as motivation as he prepares to take on his second season with SAFC.
“Starting a new season is always a huge motivation because there are always new challenges that come with it,” Castillo said. “To me, the challenge is to make it to the final. I can’t get ahead too much and start thinking about being a champion, but I think it’s an important challenge to want to be in the final. That’s the main objective because thinking about that is thinking that each game we will come out the winners, that our fans will be with us, and that all the support and backup that Spurs Sports & Entertainment are giving us will be answered with positive results.”
The unconditional support from fans is a huge factor in Castillo identifying with the city of San Antonio. The passion that the fans display each time the team takes the field is tremendous motivation for him as a player, and he feels that the only way to reciprocate his gratitude is by earning positive results on the pitch.
“I’m always grateful for our fans because despite occasional negative results, they never stop supporting,” Castillo said. “I am entirely committed to them because they are the heart of the show and they give purpose to what we do. They, along with our families, expect the best out of us, and we must give them everything that we have so that they feel identified with us and with our team.”
Castillo’s journey through San Antonio soccer has certainly been special. Since arriving in the United States in 2014, he has had the opportunity to represent the Alamo City with two clubs. Now, Castillo is enjoying the privilege of wearing the San Antonio FC crest, and would like to remain involved with SAFC and the city of San Antonio for years to come.
“More than anything it’s about being able to represent this city, this team, and this organization,” Castillo said. “I never want to leave here. I want it to be clear that this is the place where Rafael Castillo always wants to be, as a player and later on, along with this organization and this city, I want to continue to project myself in this sport in this country.”

Yo me siento completamente identificado.
