San Antonio FC concluded their inaugural campaign last weekend after barely missing out on the USL playoffs. However, the team walked away from its first season in history with plenty of achievements to build upon. Check out some numbers to recap the team’s accomplishments in the 2016 season:
1- SAFC recorded their largest win in their first match in club history, where they earned a comfortable 3-0 win on the road against Seattle Sounders FC 2. The team went on to complete a season sweep over the Sounders after beating them 1-0 at Toyota Field on Aug. 20.
3- San Antonio FC recorded three consecutive wins on two occasions, marking their highest winning streak this season. The team scored seven goals during the first streak (6/18 – 7/3) and six during the second (8/17 – 8/27).
4- Goalkeeper Matt Cardone denied four of the five penalty kicks he faced this season, and ranks first in the USL in penalty saves. Cardone tallied 48 saves in 14 appearances this season after the San Antonio native stepped in for captain Josh Ford following his injury.
5- Forward Franck Tayou and midfielder Rafa Castillo led San Antonio FC in goals scored this season with five each. Tayou recorded his five goals in 17 appearances after joining the club in June, while Castillo tallied his five goals and two assists in 28 appearances.
7- Midfielder Carlos Alvarez finished the season leading the team with seven assists after playing in every match for SAFC in all competitions. Alvarez was the first signing for the club, joining in February from the Colorado Rapids of MLS.
9- SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone set a club record after tallying nine saves at Swope Park Rangers on July 30.
10- San Antonio FC recorded 10 wins in USL matches this season, tallying seven at Toyota Field and three on the road. In addition, the team recorded two wins in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, where they beat Corinthians FC SA (PDL), and Des Moines Menace (PDL) before being eliminated by the Houston Dynamo (MLS).
14- Over half of the San Antonio FC players on the roster contributed to the team’s goal tally this season. 14 different players put their name on the scoresheet, scoring in 22 of the team’s 30 matches in USL play.
36- San Antonio FC scored 36 goals in USL matches this season. The team also scored five goals during their run in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
97- Defender Greg Cochrane led the team in minutes played this season. Cochrane featured in 97 percent of minutes played in all competitions, appearing in 2,631 of a possible 2,700 minutes in USL play, and in all 270 minutes of U.S. Open Cup play.
San Antonio FC had plenty of positives to take from their inaugural season, and though there is always room for improvement, the Alamo City club can look forward to a proper preseason and a strong 2017 campaign as they transition into their second year in existence.
