San Antonio FC earned a 1-0 win against Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Toyota Field on Saturday. A goal from Rafa Castillo secured the club’s second consecutive win this week despite a minor weather delay.
“Overall, we got the clean sheet, which is something we pride ourselves on,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We were able to hold on to that tonight and preserve it, and it put us in a position to win the game. Fortunately, tonight we were able to hold on to the lead and win the match.”
SWBC Man of the Match Rafa Castillo scored the lone goal of the match in the 51st minute after Taylor Morgan played him in on goal with a through-ball. The captain then collected the ball and placed it high and left into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The goal was Castillo’s fourth this season, tying forward Franck Tayou for the club lead. SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone recorded his second sheet for the Alamo City club. The San Antonio native has played 561 minutes in seven appearances so far this season.
The first half of the match remained scoreless after both teams battled for possession in the midfield. The match was then delayed for thirty minutes due to inclement weather immediately after the halftime whistle.
With the win, San Antonio FC moved into eighth place in the Western Conference standings, and are now in a playoff position after finding themselves in 14th place at the beginning of this week. SAFC will return to action on August 27 as they visit Saint Louis FC for the first time this year.
