San Antonio FC beat Arizona United SC 3-2 at Toyota Field on Wednesday. Goals from Carlos Alvarez, Franck Tayou, and Cesar Elizondo earned the Alamo City club its first win since July 16.
“Tonight it was about getting the result,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “The players wanted to do everything it took to get that result. I thought the first 20 minutes we played some really good football, and I’d like to go back and watch that 20 minutes because that’s something we want to replicate week in and week out.”
SAFC midfielder Carlos Alvarez opened the scoring in the 32nd minute when he found the end of a through-ball from Sebastien Thuriere and slotted the ball past Arizona goalkeeper Carl Woszcynski for the 1-0 lead.
Forward Franck Tayou tallied the second goal of the night in the 43rd minute when he dribbled across the edge of the box and buried a shot into the back of the net. Arizona United then narrowed the gap just before halftime when Luke Rooney beat SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone from long range, leaving the score 2-1 at the break.
San Antonio FC forward Cesar Elizondo added another for the hosts in the 56th minute after a run of passing play between Tayou and Rafa Castillo found him at the top of the box, where he placed the ball back-post to earn the 3-1 lead. Arizona added another goal through a penalty kick in the 87th minute, but were unable to find an equalizer by the end of the night.
San Antonio goalkeeper Josh Ford suffered an injury during warmups and was a late scratch from the lineup. Shortly after, defender Stephen McCarthy had to be substituted out of the match in the 13th minute and taken to Methodist Stone Oak Hospital for further evaluation of an arm injury.
San Antonio FC will return to action on this Saturday, August 20 when they host Seattle Sounders FC 2 at Toyota Field.
