San Antonio FC fell 0-1 to Arizona United SC at Peoria Sports Complex on Saturday night in the first of two consecutive encounters between the clubs. A handful of quality chances were not enough to earn the Alamo City club three crucial points on the road.
The first half remained scoreless after both squads created chances in the attack. SAFC goalkeeper Josh Ford made two quality saves to keep the score level, while one of the team’s best offensive chances came in the 30th minute when Sebastien Thuriere was denied by the post.
Arizona broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute when forward Tyler Blackwood found the end of a through-ball and chipped Ford to earn the home team the 1-0 lead. SAFC was unable to find the equalizer despite creating dangerous opportunities throughout the rest of the half.
San Antonio FC defender Max Gunderson made his first start for the club in USL play and recorded 88 minutes of action after frequent right-back Milton Palacios was unable to play due to a concussion. Gunderson previously made one start for the club in U.S. Open Cup play.
SAFC and Arizona United will return to action on Wednesday, August 17 as the teams face off for the second time this season at Toyota Field. San Antonio will be in search of their first win since July 16 as the team continues its hunt for a playoff spot.
