San Antonio FC tied 0-0 against Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday night at Toyota Field. The match was the second time the two clubs met this season in their inaugural seasons.
“The guys fought hard,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “I’ve said before that in this league you have to earn points, and tonight the guys dug out a point. At the end of the day, we earned a good clean sheet and good, solid performances from several players.”
The match remained scoreless despite both squads creating quality chances. San Antonio FC recorded their first home clean sheet of the season thanks to an impressive performance by goalkeeper and SWBC Man of the Match Josh Ford, who notched six saves on the night, tying his season-high and club record.
“The guys put in a lot of hard work today,” Ford said. “Things went our way on the defensive side, but unfortunately we weren’t able to find that turnaround to get the last goal at the end. I was happy to do my job and get the clean sheet with the guys in front of me.”
The first edition of the South Texas Derby saw RGV FC clinch three points in a 3-2 win with a late winning goal in stoppage time. The teams will face off against each other for the third time this season on Saturday, June 4 in Edinburg, TX as SAFC visit RGV FC for the first time in franchise history.
San Antonio FC will return to action in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, June 1 against the Des Moines Menace (PDL) in Iowa. The winner of the match will visit the Houston Dynamo (MLS) in the fourth round of the tournament.
