With the victories, SAFC completes an unbeaten preseason in eight total matches.
“It’s been a very productive preseason,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “The guys should feel very confident being undefeated in preseason. The most important thing we take away is keeping every player as healthy as possible and continuing the progression of minutes for each player. All in all, a very good preseason. We were very defensively solid and that has to continue into the start of the season.”
SAFC managed to score three goals against the Incarnate Word Cardinals all in the second half. After a trialist was brought down in the box, midfielder Danny Garcia buried the ensuing penalty kick to give SAFC a 1-0 lead. Goals from Victor Araujo and Fejiro Okiomah rounded out the scoring for the club in the first match.
Against Trinity University, the club was able to get on the scoresheet much quicker, scoring two first half goals. The first came from a beautiful cross by newcomer Bobby Moseley that was finished by Michael Reed. SAFC doubled the lead after a Stephen McCarthy header was saved and the rebound was poked home by Manolo Sanchez.
SAFC added a third in the second half when Jason Johnson scored yet another preseason goal after a great pass from Carlos Alvarez. Trinity were able to pull two goals back in quick succession, but San Antonio would eventually hold on for the win.
With the conclusion of preseason, the 2016 USL opener for SAFC will take place on April 3 in Seattle. The club will return to San Antonio the following week for their home opener at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m.
