San Antonio FC played to a 0-0 draw with St. Edwards University before beating St. Mary’s University 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Toyota Field. The closed-door matches consisted of 35-minute halves and marked the second and third preseason friendlies for the club.
“Today was another good exercise,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “We had some minute progression from our first preseason game, giving the contracted players 60 to 70 minutes on the field. Our focus the last two weeks has been on defensive shape, which we did a decent job on today. Our pressure needs to improve slightly, and we will continue to work, not only on our defensive shape, but also on our use of the football.”
Following the draw with St. Edwards University, the second group of SAFC players were able to defeat St. Mary’s thanks to goals from forward Jason Johnson and a midfield trialist. The first goal came in the opening 35 minutes after a Carlos Alvarez free kick banged off the post. Johnson was the first to react and simply tapped in the rebound to give SAFC the lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the second half when a Rafa Castillo free kick from the lef- hand side squirmed through a few defenders in the box before being tapped home by the midfield trialist.
The two matches come in preparation for the 2016 USL opener on April 3 in Seattle. The club will return to San Antonio the following week for their home opener at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 9 at 7:30 p.m.
