SAN ANTONIO– San Antonio FC has signed forward Shawn Chin and midfielder Sebastien Thuriere for the upcoming 2016 USL season, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
Chin comes to San Antonio from the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (NASL) where he spent the previous two seasons. The Miami native scored three goals and collected eight assists in 53 total appearances with the club between 2014 and 2015. Chin was an integral part of the 2014 Strikers roster that made their way to the NASL Championship game, leading the team in assists during the campaign.
“Shawn is an exciting player,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He has good pace and good speed and he loves to get beyond defenders. We expect him to fit our system in several different positions across the front line this season, and we are looking forward to working with him. He is an exciting, dynamic attacking player.”
Prior to his time in Fort Lauderdale, Chin played for the now defunct VSI Tampa Bay, as well as Minnesota United and FC Edmonton of the NASL. Chin made two appearances for the United States U-20 national team in 2008, and played college soccer at both Boston College and the University of South Florida.
“I am excited to be a part of this new club and this new journey,” said Chin. “The goal is to win a championship for the city of San Antonio, and I will work every day with the team to help make that happen.”
Thuriere, 26, joins SAFC after spending the 2015 season with the Charleston Battery (USL), making 21 appearances for the club en route to their third place Eastern Conference finish last year. Thuriere made nine starts for the club and played in 852 total minutes. Prior to his time with the Battery, Thuriere played for former USL clubs, VSI Tampa Bay and the Dayton Dutch Lions. Combined, Thuriere made 46 appearances with the two clubs in 2013 and 2014, scoring one goal from midfield.
“Sebastien is an international player who has really good experience within the USL,” said Powell. “We see him fitting in as a central midfielder in the squad. He is hungry to perform well here and for his national team, so we expect good things from him this season.”
Thuriere played collegiate soccer for the University of South Florida from 2008-12. He has been capped 19 times at the full international level by Haiti, and has competed with his country in the Caribbean Cup and the CONACAF Gold Cup, as well as Copa America and World Cup Qualifiers.
“This will be an absolutely great experience to be a part of a club with so much behind it,” said Thuriere. “I’ve been playing in the USL for a few years, and to be starting off on this note with the great group of players, coaching staff and backing of Spurs Sports & Entertainment, gives this group a great chance to excel.”
San Antonio FC will make its debut in front of home supporters at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 9 against Swope Park Rangers, the USL affiliate of Sporting Kansas City.
