San Antonio FC will play the Des Moines Menace (PDL) in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, June 1 at Valley Stadium in West Des Moines, Iowa. The match will be San Antonio’s second appearance in the tournament and the third for the Menace.
SAFC advanced to the third round of the tournament after earning a comfortable 3-1 victory at home against Corinthians FC SA in the second round of the Open Cup, where debutant Jacques Francois tallied two goals and one assist after setting up teammate Jason Johnson for the first goal of the match.
The Menace will head into the match looking for their third win of the tournament after beating FC Wichita (NPSL) 2-1 in the first round, and upsetting Tulsa Roughnecks FC (USL) 2-0 in the second round. The team will make its 26th overall appearance in the tournament after qualifying for the Open Cup for the seventh consecutive year.
San Antonio FC is currently in 12th place on the USL standings (2-4-4) despite ranking second in the league for shots (134) and shots on goal (60). The match will be the club’s fourth in just 11 days.
Des Moines (2-0-0) is off to a positive start to their season and currently sits in first place in the Heartland Division after finishing in first place in 2015 with a record of 11-2-1. The club has yet to suffer its first loss of 2016.
The winner of the match will advance to the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, where they will face the Houston Dynamo (MLS) in Houston. The Dynamo are currently in last place in the MLS Western Conference standings (3-3-7).
