San Antonio FC have signed 28-year-old forward and Costa Rican international Cesar Elizondo pending visa approval, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are excited to add Cesar to the roster,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “It is nice to add an attacking player to an area where we have had a few injuries lately. I am excited to start working with him and welcome him back to San Antonio.”
Elizondo returns to San Antonio where he spent two seasons with the San Antonio Scorpions (NASL) from 2014-2015. Elizondo scored eight total goals for the Scorpions and helped lead the team to a 2014 NASL Championship at Toyota Field.
“I’m very excited to return to a city that I love like San Antonio, and join such an exciting club in San Antonio FC,” said Elizondo. “The players, coaching staff and front office are all first class, and I can’t wait to play in front of San Antonio fans and bring titles to Toyota Field.”
Elizondo originally joined Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa where he made 28 appearances from 2008-13 before moving to the United States and joining the Carolina RailHawks (NASL) in 2013. Elizondo was traded to the Scorpions in the middle of the 2014 season. Overall, Elizondo scored 10 goals and recorded eight assists over 68 games in the NASL.
Following his stint in the United States, Elizondo returned to Costa Rica, joining first division side Pérez Zeledón for the 2015-16 season. The forward scored four goals in 18 appearances and 1404 total minutes last season.
Elizondo has also made 10 total appearances for the full Costa Rican National Team, playing for his country in Copa America matches, Copa Centroamericana matches and international friendlies. Elizondo also made four total appearances in CONCACAF Champions League play with Saprissa.
San Antonio FC will host Vancouver Whitecaps 2 in the second match of a three-game homestand at Toyota Field on Saturday, July 16 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets to the match can be purchased at www.sanantoniofc.com or by calling 210-444-5MLS.
