San Antonio FC scored four second-half goals to wrap up a 5-1 victory over the Tulsa Roughnecks in the club’s final preseason match. Goals from Kris Tyrpak, Ever Guzman, Alex Bruce and a brace from Jose Escalante helped concluded an undefeated preseason for the Alamo City club.
“Overall preseason has gone well for us,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “We've progressed from week to week and today was no different. We wanted to get out on the front foot and Tulsa made it difficult for us. But we managed to get a couple of goals in quick succession and that made the score line look more comfortable than it actually was.”
SAFC opened the scoring after Cesar Elizondo found Tyrpak with a through ball following a counter attack. Tyrpak made no mistake and passed the ball into the back of the net off the inside of the post, giving SAFC a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Guzman took advantage of a turnover and slotted home past the diving Tulsa keeper to double San Antonio’s lead. Just minutes later after another Tulsa turnover, Escalante fired a loose ball in the box into the roof of the net to give San Antonio a 3-0 lead. The Honduran would record his brace later in the half after he calmly bent a free-kick into the side netting of the far post. Bruce would make it 5-0 after Omar Gordon caused a turnover and dribbled the ball into the box before squaring to Bruce who was able to tap home. Tulsa added a consolation goal in the last few minutes to end the match with a 5-1 score line.
SAFC concluded its preseason today as they travel to Sacramento next Saturday, March 17 to face Republic FC in the opening match of the 2018 USL season. A week later, SAFC will host Saint Louis FC inn its home opener at Toyota Field on March 24 at 7:30 p.m.
SAFC Starting XI: GK Restrepo; D King, Felix (Hedrick), Christian, Cochrane; M Roushandel (Presley), Pecka, Elizondo (Rodriguez), Lopez (Gordon), Tyrpak (Escalante); F Guzman (Bruce)
