San Antonio FC (3-2-5) will travel to face Reno 1868 FC (3-3-5) at Greater Nevada Field on Saturday, May 26 at 9:30 p.m. CT. The matchup marks the first between the two clubs in the 2018 USL season.
SAFC heads into the match after advancing to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday night, beating Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on penalties. Prior to that, the Alamo City club earned a 1-1 draw in league play at home against Tulsa Roughnecks FC last Saturday.
The club will look to build on their current five-game unbeaten run in the USL. SAFC is 2-0-3 since April 22, adding two wins in their two Open Cup matches. Saturday’s match also marks the team’s fifth match in the span of 15 days in all competitions.
For Head Coach Darren Powell, utilizing the array of talent on the squad during quick-turnaround matches is key, and while the team is enjoying success so far in the Open Cup, shifting their focus to their league matchup is a priority.
“Our guys are professionals and they know the importance of the league,” Powell said. “The USL is a massive competition and one in which we want to be successful. A week is a long time in soccer, so it’s important that we have the right focus and mentality as we head into Saturday.”
Reno 1868 FC will look to earn a win at home after being eliminated from the Open Cup with a 0-1 loss at home against Sacramento Republic FC. The Nevada club will look to return to league play in strong fashion to build on their seven-game unbeaten run in the USL. The club is 3-0-4 in their previous seven games, scoring nine goals and conceding five along the way.
The match marks the third time overall that SAFC and Reno 1868 FC meet. SAFC is 1-1-0 against Reno, earning a 4-0 win at Toyota Field on April 15, 2017 before falling 0-2 on the road on August 12, 2017.
As SAFC returns to league play after a tight win on Wednesday, the team will look to use their Open Cup momentum to earn a positive result in the league this weekend.
“Morale is really high in the group,” SAFC captain Ryan Roushandel said. “Any time you go on the road to an environment like Reno’s is going to present a challenge, but the guys are doing well and our group is gelling more together. We’re a cohesive group and now we need to get the results we want. This is a good opportunity for us to ride our momentum and get a win on the road.”
