San Antonio FC (14-12-7) will host Rio Grande Valley FC (8-12-13) at Toyota Field on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 pm as the club fights to earn a playoff spot in their final match of the regular season. The night marks Fan Appreciation Night at Toyota Field.
The Alamo City club heads into the match after earning two consecutive wins at home against Seattle Sounders FC 2 and Las Vegas Lights FC. SAFC is currently in ninth place in the standings and is competing with Saint Louis FC and Swope Park Rangers for the final two playoff spots in the Western Conference.
To clinch a playoff spot, SAFC will need to win their match on Saturday and see either Saint Louis FC fall or draw against OKC Energy FC on Saturday, or Swope Park Rangers record a draw or loss on Sunday against LA Galaxy II. Should SAFC record a draw on Saturday, the only hope to clinch a playoff spot would be a loss by Swope on Sunday.
“We know what’s at stake in this match and need to secure three points to put us in a playoff position, so that’s all we’re focused on,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “Our preparation hasn’t been unlike any other week in terms of how we prepare for the opposition and the game that’s ahead of us.”
San Antonio FC will also look to earn bragging rights as they face their in-state rivals for the third time this season. SAFC is 1-0-1 against the Toros so far in 2018, playing them to a 0-0 draw at H-E-B Park on May 12 before returning to beat the club 3-1 on Aug. 29. The Alamo City club is also 1-2-1 at home when playing in a South Texas Derby and will look to level the clubs’ home records against each other with a win at Toyota Field on Saturday.
“We’re playing some of our best soccer at the right time of the year and our job now is to extend our time (in the competition),” Powell said. “We know RGV FC well and it’s a great rivalry, so it adds something extra to the match regardless of what’s at stake in the league because it’s also about the pride of winning a local derby. They’re in a good run of form, so Saturday will be a good game and obviously we want to make sure we deliver a good performance for our fans.”
The night marks Fan Appreciation Night at Toyota Field. Fans can enjoy $1 beer and sodas throughout the match courtesy of Bud Light as well as several giveaways throughout the match. SAFC will also host an ‘Extra Time’ postgame party with live music, drink specials, games and more following the final whistle. Fans can purchase tickets to the match by visiting www.sanantoniofc.com or calling 210-444-5657.
