San Antonio FC signed midfielder Jack Barmby for the 2019 USL Championship season pending league and federation clearance, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Barmby joins San Antonio FC from the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer where he made more than 30 first-team appearances since 2016 while also featuring over 30 times for the Portland Timbers 2 in USL play. Last season, the England native scored six goals and recorded three assists in 25 appearances with Timbers 2 while appearing in one Open Cup match with the MLS side.
“Jack is a player that has caught our eye since he joined Portland in 2016,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He is an exciting player with a very good left foot. He can contribute to our team in several different positions, and we look forward to him helping us on the attacking side of the ball in the 2019 season.”
After spending part of his youth career with Hull City, Barmby joined Manchester United in 2008 and spent six years with the historic club, signing his professional contract in 2013. During his tenure with the Red Devils from 2008-14, the club won three Premier League titles and two league cups.
Following a loan spell to Hartlepool United, the 24-year-old joined Leicester City in 2014 after the club was promoted to the Premier League for the first time since 2004. While with Leicester, Barmby had loan spells with Rotherham in the English Championship and Notts County in League Two before originally joining Portland on loan in 2016.
In 2018, Barmby helped lead the Timbers 2 to a sixth-place finish in the Western Conference standings and a playoff berth. Portland scored the fourth-most goals in the conference (58) prior to being eliminated in the conference quarterfinals, while Barmby was one of just 26 Western Conference players to record at least six goals and at least three assists in the USL last season.
“I am excited for the upcoming season,” said Barmby. “I am looking forward to joining the organization and can’t wait to get into the city and get going.”
Barmby has also represented England at the U-16, U-18, U-19 and U-20 levels, making 10 total appearances from 2009-15. His father, Nick Barmby, also played professional soccer, making nearly 500 appearances for seven clubs in England from 1992 to 2012.
