San Antonio FC defeated rivals RGV FC 4-3 in a closed-door preseason friendly at Toyota Field on Friday afternoon. Two goals from forward Ever Guzman helped pave the way for a preseason victory just over a week away from the SAFC league home opener.
“There are a lot of positives to take away from today’s performance,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Our guys have done well throughout preseason. We try to implement the way we want to attack and today that was a big positive for us. We just continue to work on our execution.”
The scoring started in the fourth minute when a Lance Laing cross from the left found the foot of Guzman who buried past the goalkeeper. Following two quick goals from the visitors, SAFC equalized in the 31st minute when Jack Barmby found Billy Forbes in the middle of the field for a tap in.
RGV regained the lead in the second half after firing a shot outside the 18-yard box past a diving Matt Cardone. Despite falling behind, SAFC would even the score just a minute later in the 54th when Forbes squared to Guzman who slotted the ball into the empty net for his second goal of the game. SAFC then took the lead when a Laing cross was destined to find the foot of Cristian Parano, however a touch from an RGV defender deflected the ball into their own net, giving SAFC a 4-3 lead and the eventual win.
SAFC will face Trinity University tomorrow in the club’s final preseason match of 2019. Next week, San Antonio hosts Phoenix Rising FC in the club’s USL Championship opener on March 9 at 7:30 p.m. at Toyota Field.
SAFC Starting XI: GK: Matthew Cardone; D: Kai Greene, Joshua Yaro, Amer Didic (Pascal Eboussi), Eby Ackon; M: Billy Forbes, Pecka, Lance Laing (Leeroy Maguraushe), Jack Barmby, Cristian Parano (Rafa Castillo); F: Guzman
