San Antonio FC will travel to Austin to face the Bold FC in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, looking to advance to the fourth round for the third time in four seasons.
San Antonio enters the third round after eliminating Laredo Heat SC in the second round with a 2-0 win at Toyota Field on May 14. Goals from defender Pascal Eboussi and forward Ever Guzman helped lead the club past the Heat – who play in the National Premier Soccer League.
The Austin Bold earned an impressive 2-0 win over fellow USL Championship club Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the second round and won the right to host SAFC in their first-ever third round match in the tournament. Austin and San Antonio previously met at Bold Stadium in league play on March 30 where the Bold earned a 1-0 win in the opening match of their stadium.
After advancing to the third round for the fourth straight season, San Antonio FC will look to advance to the fourth round for the third time in four years. In previous third round play, the club defeated the Des Moines Menace (USL League Two) in 2016, lost to the Tulsa Roughnecks in 2017 and defeated the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in 2018. Should SAFC advance, they would have the potential opportunity to play a Major League Soccer club in the fourth round.
Following their Open Cup clash, SAFC will travel to Sacramento on June 1 prior to hosting Reno 1868 FC on June 8 at 7:30 p.m. for Military Appreciation Night presented by Toyota. Fans can purchase tickets to Military Appreciation Night by texting or calling 210-444-5657 or by visiting www.sanantoniofc.com.
