The United Soccer League announced today the decision to suspend the 2020 season for a minimum of 30 days.

“It was very clear from our owners that the health and safety of players, fans and staff was their top priority,” said USL CEO Alec Papadakis. “In consultation with local, state and national health authorities, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Department of Homeland Security, we have temporarily suspended match play for a minimum of 30 days.”

When appropriate, the league will provide additional updates on the continuation of the 2020 Championship season and very much appreciates the continued support of USL Championship fans across the country.

We remain in constant contact with local officials to ensure that we are doing what is best for San Antonio and our community. To date, there are no confirmed cases of community-transmitted COVID-19 in San Antonio or Bexar County. “It’s a great opponent in the reigning champions,” Marcina said. “We knew it was going to be a challenge, but we saw it as a great opportunity to start the season going against them and we wanted to put on a good show for our fans and hopefully they left excited after tonight.”

SAFC scored the lone goal of the match in the 67th minute after forward Luis Solignac received the ball inside the box and found Montgomery with a low cross, which the centerback buried to give the hosts the 1-0 lead. Montgomery also scored a goal in the team’s preseason match against MLS club Orlando City SC last month.

The win propelled the Alamo City club’s run of unbeaten home openers since its 2016 inception. SAFC has posted a 3-0-2 record across their five season openers, with their biggest win coming in their 2017 opener as they beat LA Galaxy II 3-0.

San Antonio FC has signed goalkeeper Carlos Mercado for the 2020 USL Championship season pending league and federation approval, the team announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"As a staff, we are excited to welcome Carlos Mercado to the SAFC Family,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “Carlos is a talented goalkeeper, possesses great distribution with his feet, and is a good communicator and tremendous potential.  We want to thank the University of Incarnate Word Head Coach Kiki Lara for the support in this progression of Carlos’ career.”

Mercado joins San Antonio FC after playing college soccer for the University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio. The 20-year-old earned a spot on the roster after impressing the club in training over the course of the 2020 preseason. Mercado is a product of the FC Dallas (MLS) academy, and the goalkeeper has played with USL League Two clubs the Des Moines Menace and Corpus Christi FC, along with the Laredo Heat of the NPSL.

“Joining this club is very special,” said Mercado. “It’s something that I’ve wanted since I came to college at UIW and being part of SAFC has been a goal of mine for a long time because it’s a great club.” 

The Laredo, TX native has also earned call-ups to both the Mexican Youth National Team and the United States Youth National Team at the U-18 and U-16 levels respectively.

Mercado is the uncle of current San Antonio FC defender Sebastian Mercado. The goalkeeper will wear No. 99 for the club.

FOX Sports Southwest’s coverage of the 2020 San Antonio FC season will conclude at Toyota Field on Sept. 12 against the Portland Timbers 2.

FOX Sports Southwest Plus is a channel used by FOX Sports Southwest to simultaneously show multiple events on two channels and is available to all TV providers that carry FOX Sports Southwest.

San Antonio FC has added defender Axel Sjöberg on loan from the Columbus Crew SC (MLS) for the 2020 USL Championship season pending league and federation approval, the team announced today. Per club policy, terms of the loan were not disclosed.

“As a staff, we are excited to add Axel Sjöberg to the SAFC family,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “Axel is a former MLS Defender of the Year nominee, a great on-field communicator and a presence on set pieces. We want to thank the Columbus Crew staff for the season-long loan.”

Sjöberg joins after spending the last five seasons from 2015-19 with the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. While with the Rapids, the 28-year-old made 92 appearances, compiling 7,827 minutes played while scoring three goals. His most successful season came in 2016 when he was named to the MLS Best XI after starting 35 matches between the regular season and playoffs, totaling 3,162 minutes played. The defender helped lead the Rapids to a record-setting 0.41 goals against average at home after conceding just seven in Denver that season. Following the 2019 season, Sjöberg was signed by the Columbus Crew off waivers.

“I’m very excited,” said Sjöberg. “After talking to the players and coaching staff I have heard a lot of good things and things I want to be a part of. I’m ready to get started this weekend against the reigning champions at home.”

Originally drafted 14th overall by the Rapids in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, Sjöberg attended college at Marquette where he made 63 appearances from 2011-14. The Sweden native played youth soccer in his native country with Helenelunds IK and Djurgårdens IF between 1995 and 2009. While in college, Sjöberg also made 49 combined appearances with USL League Two Clubs Sollentuna United FF and the Thunder Bay Chill.

Sjöberg will wear No. 24 for the club.
