San Antonio FC signed defender Amer Didic for the 2019 USL Championship season pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Didic joins San Antonio FC after spending the previous three seasons with Swope Park Rangers (USL) and Sporting Kansas City (MLS). In three seasons with the Rangers, Didic has appeared in 84 total matches – including regular season and playoffs – while compiling 6,809 minutes and leading his team to two USL Championship matches, earning All-League First Team honors in 2016. Didic also took part in 27 shutouts over his three seasons with the USL side. In addition, Didic made four appearances with Sporting KC in U.S. Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions League matches.
“We are pleased for Amer to join the squad for 2019,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He has consistently played for Swope Park Rangers in the league the last three seasons and has been one of the best center-backs in USL, while also appearing in two USL Cup Finals. He is a strong center-back that is still developing, and he will help us on the back line.”
During the 2018 season, the 23-year-old led the Swope Park Rangers in clearances (157), aerial duels (132) and aerial duels won (98), while ranking second in blocks (26) and third in interceptions (42). Didic added one goal and two assists in league play in addition to his 90 percent passing accuracy, which led the team last season (min. 100 passes). The defender helped lead his side to their third postseason berth in three seasons, reaching the Western Conference Semifinals prior to being eliminated.
Didic appeared in 21 matches with Swope in 2017, compiling 1,811 total minutes while leading his team to their second consecutive USL Cup Final. Over the course of the season, he led the Rangers in clearances (148) and blocks (18). He was officially signed to an MLS contract by Sporting KC in May of 2017 prior to splitting time between Sporting and the Rangers through the rest of the 2017 campaign. Originally signed by the Rangers following a successful trial in 2016, Didic went on to make 28 league appearances while compiling 1,830 total minutes and scoring one goal. He would continue to appear in four playoff matches (390 minutes) as the Rangers progressed all the way to the 2016 USL Cup Final. Following his rookie season, Didic was elected to the 2016 USL All-League First Team.
“I’m very thankful and excited to be a part of this organization,” said Didic. “I’ve heard many great things about this club and seen first-hand in my experiences on the other side of the field. I can’t wait to get started and prepare for the upcoming season as we set our sights on silverware.”
Born in Bosnia and Herzegovina and raised in Canada, Didic spent time with the FC Edmonton Academy before attending Baker University and playing four years of college soccer where was a two-time NAIA All-American. Despite being a defender, Didic led Baker in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons with the team. The center-back received his first call-up to the senior Canadian National Team in August of 2017.
