San Antonio FC has re-signed forward Ever Guzman for the 2019 USL season pending league and federation clearance, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. Guzman will enter his third season with the club as its all-time leading scorer after originally joining SAFC in August 2017.
Guzman appeared in 27 total regular season matches in 2018 (1,837 minutes) with SAFC, scoring 11 goals and setting a new single-season scoring record for the Alamo City club while adding three assists. The Mexican striker is currently the club’s all-time leading scorer with 15 goals in USL play and 16 in all competitions.
“We’re very pleased to have Ever back for the 2019 season,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “He is very consistent in his level of performances and while his goals are there for everyone to see, his daily effort and commitment for the betterment of the team make him one of the best strikers in the league.”
Guzman originally joined SAFC from Liga MX in Mexico late in the 2017 USL season, scoring four goals in nine appearances in regular season play and adding a stoppage-time goal from the penalty spot in the club’s first-ever USL Cup Playoffs win.
Prior to joining SAFC, the striker spent time playing for Correcaminos UAT in Ascenso MX, where he scored 9 goals in 53 appearances from 2015-17. He made his professional debut for Monarcas Morelia in 2004 and went on to make 50 appearances for them in the span of 13 years. Guzman also spent time with six different clubs within Liga MX and Ascenso MX, including Veracruz and two different spells with Venados FC.
The 30-year-old arrived in the professional limelight after he helped lead the U-17 Mexican National Team to a World Cup title in Peru in 2005. Playing alongside the likes of Carlos Vela and Giovanni Dos Santos, Guzman finished with the second-most goals in the tournament (four) and scored the third and final goal in the 3-0 win over Brazil in the final.
“I’m very happy and grateful for this opportunity” Guzman said. “I’m happy to be back with our amazing fans and play alongside familiar faces. I’m excited to get back to work towards our goal of reaching the playoffs and competing for titles.”
In total, Guzman has appeared in eight matches for his country between the U-17 and U-23 levels, scoring five goals. Guzman has also claimed a club championship, winning the 2013 Apertura Copa MX Final with Morelia after the Monarcas won on penalty kicks following a 3-3 draw with Atlas in regular time.
