Integral Member of Jamaica’s 2017 Gold Cup Squad Joins SAFC

San Antonio FC has added Jamaican midfielder Owayne “Omar” Gordon on loan for the rest of the 2017 USL season, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed. Gordon arrives on loan from Montego Bay United in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) of Jamaica.

The 25-year-old was a key member of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup squad with Jamaica, which impressively reached the final of the tournament against the United States. Gordon has spent the last six seasons with Montego Bay in his home country since 2011, while also spending time on loan to NASL club Indy Eleven last season.

“We are excited to have Omar join us in San Antonio,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Omar has come in the past couple of weeks and shown well with the current team. We are excited to get him on the field with the team after his impressive Gold Cup experience with Jamaica.”

Gordon helped Montego Bay win the 2013-14 RSPL championship and also appeared in two CONCACAF Champions League matches with the club. Gordon has appeared 10 times at the full international level for Jamaica, including six times during the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup where his country reached the final, narrowly losing to the USA. Gordon started and played 90 minutes in that match in front of 63,000 fans at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. “It’s a great feeling to be around these players and to be part of this great club,” said Gordon. “It’s a great feeling to be here. I hope to come in and make a major impact, and I will do my best to accomplish that.”

While with Indy Eleven in 2016, Gordon played in 23 matches, starting 16 and playing in 1,467 total minutes. Gordon scored two goals and collected an assist while leading Indy to an NASL Spring Season Championship and place in the 2016 NASL Championship game where they lost on penalties to the New York Cosmos.

The club also announced today that it has released midfielder Miguel Salazar from the active roster.

With today’s transactions, the SAFC roster currently stands at 25. Gordon will wear No. 91 for the club.

San Antonio FC returns to Toyota Field next Wednesday to play Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 at 7:30 p.m. Fans can still purchase tickets by calling the SAFC sales office at 210-444-5MLS or by visiting SanAntonioFC.com.
