San Antonio FC fell 0-2 on the road against Reno 1868 FC on Saturday night. The loss marks just the second this season for the Alamo City club in USL play.
“Tonight was a very competitive game,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “You always have to go on to the next one, that’s something we’ve been preaching all year, and now our job is to go back home to San Antonio, get rested, and prepare ourselves to face OKC on Saturday.”
Reno opened the scoring in the 25th minute after a corner kick resulted in chaos inside the visitors’ box. Midfielder Luis Felipe then found a loose ball and buried it past goalkeeper Diego Re-strepo for the 1-0 lead.
The hosts widened their lead in the 70th minute after forward Brian Brown picked Restrepo’s pocket and found himself in on an open net. SAFC had a chance to equalize 13 minutes later after forward Cesar Elizondo was taken down in the opposition’s box, but midfielder Billy Forbes was denied by the crossbar from the penalty spot.
The match marked SAFC defender Greg Cochrane’s 50th USL appearance for the club. Cochrane is the first player to reach the milestone for the Silver and Black, featuring in 4,423 USL minutes for the team since their 2016 inaugural season.
San Antonio FC will return to USL action on Saturday, August 19 as they travel to face Oklahoma City Energy FC for the third matchup between the two sides this season.
