San Antonio FC will travel to face Rio Grande Valley FC at H-E-B Park in Edinburg, TX at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 26. The match will be both clubs’ first of the 2017 USL season and the fifth matchup between the two sides overall.
San Antonio FC will look to earn their first ever win against RGV FC after falling to the club three times and earning one draw last season. After undergoing their first full offseason, SAFC reinforced its ranks, adding 13 new players to its roster along with 11 returning players from the squad last season.
Rio Grande Valley will aim to continue last season’s momentum after finishing the regular season in second place and earning a spot in the USL playoffs. The club returns to league play with a new head coach and several changes in its roster.
The SAFC attack will be led by new wingers Kris Tyrpak and Billy Forbes, as well as returning midfielder Rafa Castillo, who led the team in goals, shots, and shots on goal in 2016. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Matt Cardone’s back line will be bolstered by the addition of defenders Cyprian Hedrick, Sebastien Ibeagha, and Ben Newnam.
The match will be the fifth edition of the South Texas Derby and the third time that the matchup is played in Edinburg. In addition, the contest will be the first official USL match to take place at H-E-B Park after the Toros opened the stadium on March 22 in a friendly loss to Rayados de Monterrey (Liga MX).
