San Antonio FC has signed midfielder and San Antonio native Maxi Rodriguez for the upcoming 2017 USL season pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Rodriguez was unveiled at an SAFC Season Ticket Member event at Toyota Field.
Rodriguez joins the club after impressing the SAFC coaching staff while on trial during the club’s preseason. The 21-year-old was born and raised in San Antonio and attended Warren High School where he was named the Conference Player of the Year in 2011. Rodriguez was also a member of Classics Elite Soccer Academy and was the captain of his USSF Academy team.
“Maxi is another San Antonio boy joining the club,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He has worked extremely hard and shown well in preseason, and he comes from a good college program in UNC Charlotte. We are looking forward to seeing how he progresses this season.”
Rodriguez attended UNC Charlotte and played four years of collegiate soccer with the 49ers. The midfielder helped lead UNCC to a Conference USA regular season title in 2016 while also being named third-team All-Conference. In his four years with the 49ers, Rodriguez helped take his team to NCAA Tournament three times. Overall, Rodriguez played 60 games with UNCC, making 53 starts, scoring two goals and recording four assists.
“I am super happy to join a club like San Antonio FC,” said Rodriguez. “After spending four years out of San Antonio and Texas, I am excited to come back and represent this organization and my home city. I can’t wait to get ready for the season.”
With the signing of Rodriguez, the current SAFC roster stands at 23.
San Antonio FC is currently prepping for its second season in the USL, which is scheduled to kick off on March 26 at RGV FC before the club returns to Toyota Field for its home opener on April 1 vs. LA Galaxy II at 7:30 p.m. Fans interested in season tickets can contact the SAFC sales office at 210-444-5MLS or visit SanAntonioFC.com.
