Former NASL Assist Leader Joins SAFC for Upcoming Season

San Antonio FC has signed midfielder Billy Forbes for the 2017 USL season pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Forbes returns to San Antonio where he spent two seasons playing with the now-defunct San Antonio Scorpions (NASL) from 2014-15. During his time with the Scorpions, Forbes appeared in 48 matches, scoring nine goals and recording a club-high 15 assists while helping lead his team to the 2014 NASL Championship at Toyota Field. Forbes led the NASL in assists in 2014 (seven), while ranking second in the same category the following season (eight). The 26-year-old was named the NASL Player of the Week in week seven of the 2015 season.

“We are really glad to have Billy back in San Antonio,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He is an exciting player who we feel can be one of the best players in the USL. He can create opportunities for himself and other players especially in the attacking half. We hope that we can continue to help with his development here in San Antonio.”

Forbes joins SAFC after spending the 2016 season with Rayo OKC (NASL) where he appeared in 29 games, starting 25 and playing 2,277 total minutes. Forbes led the team with four assists and added three goals, leading Rayo OKC to the playoffs after the club finished fourth in the combined table between the Spring and Fall seasons. Over the last three NASL seasons, no other player has recorded as many assists as Forbes (19).

Prior to joining the Scorpions in 2014, Forbes spent time with Premier Development League (PDL) sides Southern West Virginia King's Warriors and the Mississippi Brilla from 2012-13. Over the course of his time in the PDL, Forbes scored nine goals in 22 appearances.

“I am so excited to be back home in San Antonio and join an organization as impressive as this one,” said Forbes. “I have incredible memories of playing in front of these amazing fans at Toyota Field and I can’t wait to experience that again. I look forward to working with the team and everyone else involved to help bring a USL championship to San Antonio.”

Forbes is also a full-international and is currently the captain of the Turks and Caicos National Team. He has appeared in six matches since 2008 including World Cup Qualifiers, scoring one goal over 540 total minutes. Forbes played collegiate soccer at Western Texas University, scoring 8 goals in 18 games before transferring to Lubbock Christian University in 2013, and later becoming the Chaparrals’ first-ever All-American.

Forbes joins Akwafei Ajeakwa, Kris Tyrpak, Cyprian Hedrick and Ben Newnam as new faces on the San Antonio FC roster this season in addition to the nine returning players from last year.
