San Antonio FC will host Mountain Division rivals Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC on Saturday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Alamo City club’s 2021 USL Championship home opener. The match marks the third time in club history that SAFC will start the regular season at Toyota Field.
SAFC will look to extend its unbeaten run in home openers after compiling a 3-0-2 record so far in the team’s history. Last season, SAFC defeated the then defending champion Real Monarchs SLC 1-0 at home to start the season en route to what would become an unbeaten home record during the 2020 regular season. Overall in the club’s history, SAFC has compiled a 41-10-22 record in 73 regular season matches at Toyota Field.
The May 1 matchup marks the ninth meeting between San Antonio and Switchbacks FC, and first since October of the 2019 season. SAFC has compiled a 2-3-3 record against Colorado Springs, but a 2-0-2 record at home, as the two sides will face each other four times over the course of the 2021 season. SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone’s 12 saves against the Switchbacks in his career are the most by any goalkeeper in the series.
