Pair of 17-Year-Old Scorers Help SAFC Complete Comeback Win

Despite falling to an early 0-2 lead at home against Reno 1868 FC last Saturday, San Antonio FC never gave up on earning a result in front of their home fans. In fact, the club had their persistence pay off before the halftime whistle even sounded when forward Ever Guzman headed in a Kai Greene cross to cut Reno’s lead in half. This strike, along with a top second-half performance set the stage up for two of San Antonio’s youngest players to contribute greatly to the final scoreline.

As the second half began, San Antonio FC was quickly demonstrating why they have now gone six regular season games unbeaten at Toyota Field. The players were pushing for the equalizer with sights on completing the biggest comeback for the team this season. 17-year-old midfielder Ethan Bryant came close when his low shot from 22 yards hit the post, but he wouldn’t be denied for long. After a good run down the left by teammate Billy Forbes, Bryant capitalized off a poor clearance by the Reno defender and slotted the tying goal past goalkeeper Matt Bersano. The game was tied and it was clearly San Antonio that was pushing for the winner.

The other 17-year-old midfielder in the 18-man squad for San Antonio FC was Jose Gallegos, who came on after halftime to help the team try and complete the comeback. After Bryant’s goal, Gallego’s moment would come next. Following an extended one-two with Jack Barmby, Gallegos cut back on his defender to send his shot in the top corner of the goal, giving SAFC the lead. Gallegos, Bryant and the rest of the SAFC players sprinted to the corner flag to celebrate with the excited supporters. San Antonio would go on to hold the lead and earn the three points, improving their 2019 home record to 4-1-3.

The win gives San Antonio FC momentum as they head into their next match on the road to OKC Energy FC this weekend. In eight total matches, San Antonio and OKC have drawn six games, while the Alamo City club earned their first win their last time out in Oklahoma in July of last year. The squad, with the help of their double 17-year-old goal-scorers will look to piece back-to-back wins together for the second time this season.
